Confluence has been chosen as the platform at present because:
- Portability - both the entire wiki instance and individual spaces/pages can be exported to XML (the contents could be exported to an alternative web site or wiki if needed)
- Source code - available for licenced customers
- Usage - Confluence is already widely used by the scientific community
- User friendly - anyone who has used a word processor before will find creation and editing of pages very straightforward
- Extendable - a wide range of third party plugins are available to extend the functionality of Confluence, and custom apps can be easily integrated into the platform
- Support - Confluence comes with a commercial support agreement, and has an active support and development community
- Features - Confluence supported most of the basic functionality required for SOKI's operations
- Permissions - secure management of pages that need protection during development by a small number of the community
